Is Your Website Outdated?

Posted in Web Design Tips | by Charles Souders

We all know designing a new website can be very stressful. A lot of time and preparation is required before a website can go live. But after the website is finished, both the owner and the web designer feel a great sense of pride in creating unique and effective website. But as times change and new technologies emerge, redesigning a website becomes necessary to the address the unique challenges that arise as industries evolve, customer’s needs and tastes change and competitors emerge.

Even the best websites eventually need to be updated and redesigned. These changes can be merely a simple update or complete design overhaul. If the site is particularly outdated, a lot more work may need to be done.

Signs that indicate it’s time to redesign your site are:

1. Your Site Looks 5 or 10 Years Old
Technology is evolving at a fast pace and design trends always change. Cars, brochure and websites all have one thing in common, something that looked sophisticated five or ten years ago may look old and outdated today. If you have a site using older technologies such as frames and tables for layout, slow-loading graphics and text as images (rather than HTML), it is time to completely overhaul the website. Having an old website can affect the way customers and search engines look at your website and your company.

2. Your Navigation and Content Isn’t User-Friendly
If customers contact you with technical questions or negative comments about your website on a regular basis, you should be worried. It means that your site isn’t working for them. It could be the design, content, structure, navigation or any number of other factors. Maybe the navigation is confusing or maybe the content isn’t written properly. Updating or redesigning the web site or rewriting the content may be necessary for your business to be successful.

3. Your Business Has Expanded or Changed
Your website should reflect your business. If the business operation, products, services has grown or changed over the years, the website should likewise be updated. If you’ve only underwent minor changes, uploading additional content may solve the problem. However, if the overall business has changed or if the business has grown dramatically, particular focus should be given to the website.

4. Your Site is Costing Too Much to Update
Today’s technology provides options for affordable website update. If you’re racking up huge expenses to make minor changes and updates, it is important to consider a complete design overhaul. List everything you want your site to have and consult with a web designer. Over the long run, it can be a lot cheaper to start over with a modern content management system than to deal with a website that simply isn’t working.
